Batch Renaming in Path Finder lets you rename many files at once using patterns, search and replace, and sequences. It’s much faster than renaming items one by one.
Open the Batch Rename tool
Select the files or folders you want to rename.
Right-click on the selection.
Choose Rename Items (or similar, depending on your version).
The Batch Rename window will appear.
Rename modes
The Batch Rename window typically offers several modes, such as:
Replace Text
Find a specific part of the existing file names and replace it with something else.
Example: change
IMG_toHoliday_.
Add Text
Add text before or after the current file name.
Example: append
_FINALto all filenames.
Format
Build a completely new naming scheme using elements like:
Base name
Date
Sequence numbers (e.g. 001, 002, 003)
These modes can often be combined or configured to match your naming convention.
Preview changes before renaming
As you adjust settings in Batch Rename:
You will see a preview of the new names before applying changes.
This lets you confirm that your pattern is correct and that you won’t accidentally overwrite important naming information.
When you’re satisfied:
Click Rename to apply the changes.
When to use Batch Rename
Batch Rename is especially useful for:
Photo and video sets
Exported files from other tools with generic names
Log files or reports you want to standardize
Any large folder where you want consistent naming
Using Batch Rename saves time and helps you keep your files organized with clear, predictable names.
