Smart Sorting in Path Finder goes beyond basic “Sort by Name”. You can sort and group files using different attributes so that your folder views match the way you actually work.
Sort by different attributes
In most views (especially List View), you can sort items by:
Name
Date Modified / Date Created / Date Last Opened
Size
Kind (file type)
Tags
Other available columns, depending on your configuration
You can:
Click a column header (in List View) to sort by that column.
Click again to reverse the sort order (ascending/descending).
Use “Arrange By” for smarter organization
The View menu typically includes Arrange By options, letting you organize by:
Name
Kind
Application
Date (various)
Size
Tags
When you Arrange By an attribute, Path Finder can group items accordingly (see below).
Group items for clarity
If your version supports it, you can enable Use Groups (or similar wording) in the View options:
Files are grouped by the chosen attribute (for example, “Today”, “Yesterday”, “Earlier this Month” when arranging by Date).
Each group gets its own heading, making large folders easier to understand at a glance.
Grouping is especially useful in:
Downloads (group by Date)
Project folders (group by Kind or Tags)
Archives and backups (group by Date or Size)
Smart Sorting helps you see patterns in your files quickly, instead of scrolling through long, unsorted lists.
