This article collects small but powerful tips that make Path Finder feel much faster and smarter in everyday use.
Use Quick Look everywhere (Spacebar)
You can use Quick Look not only in normal Path Finder windows, but also:
In many open/save dialogs
While selecting files in different views
Just:
Select a file.
Press Spacebar.
Press Spacebar or Esc again to close.
This is often faster than opening the file in its full app just to check its contents.
Select files by pattern (Select by Name)
When you need to select many similarly named files:
In the menu bar, go to Edit > Select > Select by Name… (wording may vary).
Enter a pattern (e.g.
IMG_*,*.log,report_2025*).Path Finder will select all files matching that pattern in the current folder.
This is very useful for bulk operations (rename, move, delete, compress, etc.).
Drag paths into Terminal
When using the Terminal module:
Drag a file or folder from the browser into the Terminal window.
Path Finder inserts the full path into the command line for you.
No more typing long paths or worrying about escaping spaces.
Custom folder icons
You can customize folder icons to make important folders stand out visually.
Select a folder that has the icon you like (or an image file you want to use).
Open Get Info (Command + I).
Click the icon at the top of the Get Info window and press Command + C to copy.
Select the target folder, open its Get Info, click its icon, and press Command + V to paste.
You can do this from inside Path Finder using its Get Info feature.
Use tags for “smart” organization
Even if files live in different folders, you can:
Apply the same tag to all items related to a project (e.g. “Project Alpha”).
Click that tag in the Sidebar to see them together.
Combine tags with:
Smart search or saved searches (where supported)
Sorting and filtering by tag
This gives you a flexible, cross-folder organization system.
Combine dual-pane with modules
For heavy file work, a great setup is:
Dual-pane view:
Left: source folders (Column View for fast navigation)
Right: destination or project structure (List View for details)
Modules around them:
Preview at the side or bottom
Info and Attributes on the other side
Drop Stack and Trash in a corner
Once you’ve arranged this layout, you can use tabs and tab presets to restore it quickly whenever you need a “power workspace”.
These small tricks compound over time and can easily save you dozens of clicks per day.
