I search my external disk for a file thatI know is there, but do not
get any results. Is it because the search is not recursive by default?
How can I make a recursive search?

The search is recursive by default. Please post a screenshot of your Find window.

To be honest, Agus, I don't know how Spotlight is supposed to work, I search for txt or .txt from Finder and I get some text files and also a zip file. I gave up on Spotlight a long time ago since searches based only on indexed files is not for me.
I would use the Search function (the icon next to Spotlight's in the Find window). I'm pretty positive you will find what you're looking for, recursively.
