Path Finder uses AppleScript for those email functions and it depends on Thunderbird to have support for it. Anyway, do you have Thunderbird set as the default mail client in > Preferences > General > Default email reader?
Also, a workaround to just attach an item to Thunderbird without compressing, is to right click on an item and choose Open with > Running > Thunderbird.

Entourage had the same issue for a time but it seems they improved AppleScript support which is good news to a lot of users in the old forums, by the way.
As of January 2012, Thunderbird still doesn't support AppleScript, so there's nothing we can do, I'm afraid.
