PathFinder cannot eject volumes because Pathfinder is using it?!?

This is frustrating. I'm trying to eject an external volume. After a few seconds a Pathfinder message pops up telling me that the volume cannot be ejected because Pathfinder is using it. Great - thanks. Why can't Pathfinder stop doing whatever is causing the problems - since I've asked Pathfinder itself to eject the volume? It makes for a hilarious dialog box (see attached).
