PF 9.4 freezes when changing directories

I currently have Version 9.0.5 (2026) installed on two computers. When I go to change to a different directory in the sidebar, the main window stays where it was and won't go to the chosen location.

If I use the Path Navigator, I can then change directories to where I'd like to navigate. Bug?

I also have this problem - after a period of inactivity trying to select a folder from Favorites does nothing and I have to use the nav bar to unfreeze PF before I can select from Favorites.

I run PF 9.0.6 although I also had this problem with PF 8.

    Hi,

If you focus on the Path Finder browser window first, and then retry, does it work? Which version of macOS are you running?

    Looking forward to your replies.

I’m running a pre-release of 10.15.3, but note that this problem has been on-going prior to this release. For the record, I'm running 9.0.5 (2026) of PF.

If Im already in the correct location and click on a file in the browser, it is responsive. If I need to navigate to another directory however, the directory tree is non-responsive. This doesn’t happen every time I use PF, but about 25% of the time.

    Thanks.

    Best,
    Ron

    Hi Ron,

Does the issue persist on Path Finder 9.0.6 (2027)?

Could you send us a sample (a snapshot) of Path Finder process in a separate file? This will enable us to analyze what happens with the application. Here's how to get it:

    1. Open Path Finder and reproduce the problem. If the problem is dynamic (e.g. unexpected action result), please try reproducing it during the sample collection.
    2. Open Activity Monitor from the /Applications/Utilities folder.
    3. Select Path Finder in the process list. To help making a selection, type "Path Finder" in the Filter field.
    4. Click the Sample Process button in the toolbar - this will open a new window entitled "Sample of Path Finder" and a sample of the process is collected.
    5. Click Save and save the sample file.
    6. Close (Command-W) the Sample window opened in step 2.
    7. Send the sample file saved in step 5 to us.

    Looking forward to your reply.

I just installed 9.0.6 to see if this solves the problem. If it doesn’t, I'll get a snapshot for you to see what is interfering with PF.

    Thanks.

Letting it sit, open, triggers the problem. If I quit it and restart the application, everything returns to normal, so it appears something is happening over time that causes the problem.

First of all, please accept my apologies for such a delayed response. I understand how frustrating it might be not to receive any response for such a long time. I apologize and will make sure this won’t happen again.

Can you please specify if the following issue still persists once you update your Path Finder 9 to the latest version available, e.g. 9.4?

Yes, this is still happening. The problem occurs when I use Favorites in the sidebar. If I use the breadcrumbs under the Tab, PF is responsive.

The only thing I see is that it occurs on a large directory where there are thousands of files and is far less likely to happen on a smaller directory, say Downloads.

I can repeat the same behavior on both of my Macs.

    Thanks for the follow-up.

    Best,
    Ron

Yes this is still happening occasionally. Since the upgrade to PF 9.4 the number of times this freeze occurs is greatly reduced, but it is still a problem even when viewing a folder with just a few files in it.

    Just to reiterate
When PF is made active after a period of being minimized to the dock or just in the background I cannot use the favorites to jump to another folder
Clicking in the current folder/browser will unfreeze PF and I can then use favorites
This occurs on my Mac but not on my MacBook
    Regards
    Colin

I'm experiencing this same problem, and have been for months. It's only a mild annoyance, so I didn't come looking for answers until now. :)

In reference to ceo's post above, I haven't noticed any correlation between the number of files and the likelihood of running into this bug, but I have noticed that it happens for me almost exclusively when the directory PF is already displaying is on a remote server (SMB mount usually) and I click on a Favourite to display a local directory.

I will see about catching a sample next time I run into it.

Here you go, a couple of sample files, once with Path Finder stuck and once after I unstick it. It's pretty easy to generate this problem, because it happens basically every time I've left Path Finder sitting for a long time on one of my SMB mounted directories.

When it's stuck, Path Finder is displaying "/Volumes/Data/incoming/2020-10", and I've clicked on "Applications" on the left. "Applications" highlights, but the directory window does not change. Sample taken at this point. Then I clicked on "incoming" in the path bar, which makes the directory window correctly show "/Volumes/Data/incoming". Then I clicked on "Applications" on the left, and Path Finder correctly displays the Applications directory. Second sample taken at this point.

These samples are taken on Big Sur build 20A5384c, which obviously isn't officially supported, but I've had this problem for a long time, including on release builds of Catalina.
