I have just updated to version 9 and it has replaced all my favorites with the defaults.

How do I get my favorites back? WHat other data does the upgrade delete?

As Pathfinder 8 did this as well constantly what have you fixed here?

I'm just a user, but because PathFinder often crashes for me, for example whenever I open a 2nd PF browser window, what I recommend is: Always do a SAVE AS for your Sidebar Module that holds Favorites. (SEE SCREENSHOT BELOW).

This way it is very simple to restore your favs by selecting from your Saved Settings at the bottom of the "management" pop-up seen in same screesnhot. Hope that helps.

Just one question: when your favourites go back to defaults, is that the only setting going to defaults, of something else, like modules colours, positions, sized, etc?

I like some things at the bottom of the screen like previews and they have gone.

This is the same as PathFinder 8. (I would look at how Pathfinder 7 did this which only had a memory problem actually better version 6 which worked and I see no improvements in function since then)

    Mark,

"I like some things at the bottom of the screen like previews and they have gone." Can you please be a bit more specific? What is missing, are you talking about shelves? They are back in Path Finder 9, but you have to populate them with modules yourself. Just drag any module to the bottom of the window, the shelf will uncollapse and you can drop module(s) in there.

    Look at some examples here:

Speaking of SHELVES, I watched the new PathFinder video on Youtune that shows this return of SHELVES feature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zepJTI4vXhM

    I commented there the following:
I actually don't understand what's different shown here from PF8, which I use heavily customized. In PF8 I easily used the Modules' drag-drop-into-the-browser feature, adding multiple sidebars to left and right of the 2-panes, which I could then drag & drop relocate them anywhere in the Browser. Can you explain what is different because I don't see it?

(Re DEFAULTS overwrite, this comment failed to post earlier)

For me, what routinely happens whenever I try to open a New Browser Window, the app crashes, the Crash Reporter comes onscreen. (I have filled out many of them :) . Then, when I relaunch, the ICON SIZES in my Sidebar Modules changes to super-small. But when I go to the tools manager for that module, the Icon Size is numerically correct, but it does not match the display size of the icons. This is what I have to do every time:

Open the management tab, then slide the icon sizer in any direction — just to get the icon sizes moving again in the Sidebar, then return it to the size I'd set it on (28 usually).

Re COLORS, Defaults & Other Attributes: For me, I learned 9 months ago to always, several times a week, make a backup of my system preferences setting for PathFinder, so that I can restore all attributes when things crash or return to defaults.

For me, though, I have not had many occasions where all the icons return to defaults. When PF crashes for me, the custom background colors and text attributes are not changed or erased. Only the ICON SIZES mess up. But every so often if it crashes and wipes my custom Favorites with defaults, when that DOES happen, it also restores default background colors and text sizes as well.

REQUEST: Because I like to have Sidebars that are 100% just ICONS and no text, I like to keep the width of the Sidebar as narrow as it can get. However, because of the collapse/expand arrows for Favs, etc, after crashes the Sidebar display never holds my horizontal scroll placment of icons, instead pushing everything to the right, asndf out of view, because it defaults to align the ARROWS to left margin. I suspect I am not alone in wishing that I could have the OPTION to "Use Icons Only", and not have any expand/collapse arrows at all, so that I can maintain the exact placement of my icons.

I can be that more specific as to do that I need to fiddle around and set things up again but Pathfinder will then delete them so not really want to waste the time as it has been broken for over a year (and I did report it)

There is a pane that when you click on a file will show a preview if text or pdf or html or jpeg etc I just have a git window.

Ok a simple menu changes this but I had several ones before. Another I think was file info.

What would help would be knowing what file contains this as I have backups.

Ideally it would be text so I could make hot read only and put under version control.

I'm losing defaults, too, though sometimes they reappear. Right now my right-hand shelf has gone, and all my settings in the Sidebar have gone. Toolbar buttons are still the ones I chose, though.

When launched, PF 9 doesn't display my favorites, despite them being in the Finder sidebar.

Sometimes, after several minutes, they'll randomly appear. Sometimes not.

Not sure if it's Catalina, or PF but this is a hugely buggy release.

This seems like such an important bug report, you'd think Cocoatech would be responding...

    Hi Richard,

Shelves in PF9 allow to have modules in them temporarily hidden, freeing up screen space. Video doesn't show this, sorry for the confusion!

    Hi Mark,

We are looking into the disappearing favorites/preferences, but so far we weren't able to reproduce the issue and it's very hard to diagnose it, unfortunately. We do work on it though!

Your preferences are stored in the following items:
    /Library/Application Support/Path Finder/ (directory)
    /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.cocoatech.PathFinder.plist (file)
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Path Finder (directory)

You may backup those items in order to restore them later should any issues occur.

    Hi bluloo,

We are really sorry about this not working anymore. The API for that functionality (syncing "Favorites" and in general all those "Recent…" lists) was deprecated and abandoned a long time ago. In each new version of PF it worked worse. We tried having that as long as possible, but we cross the point at which it became a liability and not feature. It became a real pain, both in customer support and code maintenance. We don't want to make any kind of excuses here, but in this case, it's really Apple to blame. As far as we know, no other 3rd party application offers that sort of synchronization, even if they did they gave up a long time ago. We kept it as long as possible, but the burden of supporting it became just too overwhelming for the benefits it provides.

Please feel free to write us back and we will be happy to assist you.

    Best Regards,
    Jordan

    Thanks for the preference info
However not that much use as they are binary and in the plist it is a mix of current window positions etc and info from the preferences, the latter would be nice in a text file together with info re favourites, browsers etc so thay can be properly managed like the rest of my environment.

It would also help you debug as it would be easier to see tha chnages and control when they happen.

I have had the described issues myself quite often.

The upgrade from PF8 to PF9 definately did not migrate the settings but reset to defaults.

And everytime a PF window hangs or the app crashes, I'm also back to the default sidebar. Not only the Favorites items are reset, but all modules. At least now I made a habbit out of saving the settings to quickly be able to restore them, so now I'm fine. But there were quite some moments before when I just wanted to quit using it.
