PathFinder 8 slows my machine down dramatically.

Ever since buying my new iMac I've thought, why is this machine so slow? Always so many beachballs and delays with everything, as if it is low on RAM or something. I have 32GB so I know that's not it.
Today I was looking at Activity Monitor and noticed PathFinder taking 5.0 GB of memory. I tried quitting it and the machine sped up dramatically. I thought, wow a memory leak, OK, I'll start it up again and see how long it takes to bog down.
IMMEDIATELY the machine went back to being annoyingly slow. PathFinder is not taking up much memory any more, but switching between apps and other common actions are just slowed down, noticeably, upon launch, and everything clears up when I quit PF8.
I'm hoping the Cocoatech people can help.
I can no longer use PathFinder if it is going to cause this kind of experience. So back to Finder. Bummer because I like some of the Pathfinder features.
PathFinder version 8.3.8 on OS X Mojave 10.14.2
32 GB RAM, brand new iMac with 512 GB SSD internal drive and 2TB external storage.

    Hi Rich,

Please choose a .txt file, open Preview module preferences (gear button next to its header) and uncheck "Colorize syntax".

Also, it may be worth trying to restore defaults for View Settings (cmd+J).
Make sure to have "Calculate all sizes" unchecked here.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Please feel free to write us back and we will be happy to assist you.

    Best Regards,

That does seem to help, strangely. What is the cause of this?
Even a better solution for me is to quit PathFinder though in terms of performance on my machiner. It affects all sorts of things, from my web apps, to Skype, to... just everything. If PF is running, Skype chokes and bogs down for me, but if not, it's OK. Not sure if the correlation is 100%.

    Hi Rich,

Were you able to notice what exactly was happening in Path Finder when your machine slows down?

Hi, thank you for asking. It is just a constant drag on performance, I think. Not doing anything in particular at the time. Ideally I would be completely unaware, and I only recently connected it to PathFinder.

My habitual layout is one like this. I have a terminal module in the bottom, some aliases to removable folder drives on the left, a couple of external drives mounted. Not sure what might be the issue.

    Hi Rich,

Will the issue still persist under Guest macOS user?
Also, could you please check if the behavior differs if you don't mount any drives?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks for the replies. I believe that my performance issues were due to an SSD drive which was not functioning correctly, and was not due to PathFinder.
