Hi

The new Pathfinder 6 looks great, however I was very annoyed that it immediately lost all my open tabs, all the fonts shrunk back to default size, and all my custom button layout disappeared! Please tell me there's a way to get it back without hours of manual work??

Hi Creek1, did you ever find a solution to this? Cocoatech eventually replied to one of my messages denying any problem and suggesting I just go back to V5! It's a real shame as I love this app :-(

With this post, here are the (current) Lost Six of Pathfinder Six.

    1. Loss of customized tabs
    2. Lost of customize buttons
    3. Default to different window size and fonts
    4. Loss of the listing of “devices” in slide panel/ drawer
    5. Loss of customized folders & documents in slide panel/drawer
    6. Loss of customized nameS for labels (E..g “Red” used to be “Problem File”

I don't expect these to be fixed. The price of getting new features & improved cosmetics to market in PF6 —without consideration of the 6 listed issues above—will leave its loyal customers who have optimized their PF5 wondering why they changed. My expectation is that this $20 upgrade will cost me about 2 hours of professional time to try and concoct a fix.

I have used other software products that cost $20 to buy and $200 of my time to fix, however this is the 1st time it's happened with cocoa tech. I am disappointed.

I don't believe it. All my customised settings are gone!! Can I get them back if I revert to v5? Can I restore settings from backup in TimeMachine? Anyone know which file contains the settings??

They told me the settings will return if I revert to V5, but I'm halfway
through setting them up again and don't want to risk it!

I found out how to restore in another discussion here:

    http://support.cocoatech.com/discussions/problems/2115-reverting-fr...

Thank god for that. That must have been the quickest restore to previous version I have ever done. About 5minutes from upgrade to restore to previous! No way will I upgrade to V6 until they fix this problem. The whole benefit of Pathfinder to me was the customisation. If I cannot apply all my carefully constructed changes to a new upgrade then what is the point??

That's useful to know thanks. It's a big shame they didn't warn us of this
in advance, as you say the great power of Path Finder is in the
customisation! Also very disappointing that they ignored my support
requests on this issue for a whole week. It's a major mistake to cause
such hassle to your biggest fans.

I'm sorry, everyone, for the extremely delayed response. We're finally digging our way out of the support avalanche from the PF 6 release.

We had to make some tough decisions concerning PF 6's customization. Many of Path Finder's more obscure options were absorbing significant development focus and were causing other more prominent features to stagnate. Path Finder's codebase has grown quite complex over the years - we've had to start pruning.

That said, user feedback drive's Path Finder's development. We've already reintegrated a few small features that we had mistakenly thought there wasn't much demand for. We'll keep tabs on what people are saying about PF 6's customization options.

I think I understand Pathfinder v6 marketing strategy much better now:

Entranced by new technologies and indifferent to what your current customer
base used (because it never occurred to you to ask by survey or otherwise),
PF added product value that PF thought would create enough new sales to
justify the losses arising from your formerly loyal customers whose features
    were axed.

Cutthroat software capitalism at its finest. Congratulations!

Thank you Michael for finally replying. I'm not sure how carefully you read the above, but most of the lost settings are NOT features which have been removed.

It's probably a bit late now to be sorting out a fix anyway.

I still love Pathfinder but hope that any future upgrades (and support) will be better managed.

Garry, I apologize, I misunderstood. Many users had performed various customizations to PF 5 which we've removed (e.g. background images, custom colors, and various window element layouts).

These upgrade issues unfortunately didn't come out during our beta test. My best suggestion is to try to restore Path Finder 5's preferences from a backup if you have one, otherwise you may just need to restore settings by hand. I wish I could offer a better solution.

I determine several weeks ago that certain PF5 customized settings were lost
and not recoverable: the time machine option expired before the downgrade
option was realistic and my 30 years experience on the Mac OS platform have
never produced good results with a downgrade.

I have moved on from my anger at Pathfinder 5 and its troubled upgrade
issues: I will continue to use the product and find it superior to other
options that I have looked at. Pathfinder 6 is, on balance, an excellent
    product.

In closing, I do note my appreciate that you cared enough to respond to a
disgruntled customer: that reassures me that the company still cares about
producing a quality product‹this which bodes well for further upgrades of
    Pathfinder.
