Samba & PathFinder

Why does PathFinder have an smb.conf within itself?

..and it references to "bring in" shares and settings that are handled by external means.

vfs objects = notify_kqueue,darwinacl,darwin_streams

; Pull in system-wide preference settings. These are managed
; by smb-sync-preferences.
include = /var/db/smb.conf
; include = /usr/local/samba/etc/smb.conf

; Pull in system share configuration. These are managed
; by smb-sync-shares.
include = /var/db/samba/smb.shares

What happens if it does not find these files?

...what happens if a later Samba is installed within OSX and is configured differently, are these conflicting?

Those locations and files it's referencing are based on Snow Leopard era Samba.
The VFS Objects, darwinacl and darwin_streams are not part of the current Samba distributions.

Samba 4.8.2 has it's configuration file at: /usr/local/samba/etc/smb.conf
and the vfs objects options have changed quite a bit. darwinacl, darwin_streams are not part of it any longer by these names.

Currently I'm using the line below with 4.8.2 on 10.13
vfs objects = shadow_copy2 catia fruit streams_xattr acl_xattr recycle aio_pthread

There's got to be some reason why this thing is slower and more sluggish than molasses on the streets of Boston in the Winter.

PathFinder 6 on Snow Leopard totally kills 7 and 8 in their current form.
