File Compare

File compare does nothing on my system (Mac OS 10.13.6; Path Finder 8.0.1.). I'm attaching three files to show that, I have File Compare preferences configured, that /usr/bin/opendiff is indeed present in the system, and the dual pane is selected properly. I put up two windows and select exactly one (txt to make it simple) file in each, either press F9 or go by the menu Commands-->Compare Selected Items, either way, and nothing happens. The menu choice is not greyed out; F9 "lights up" the Window item on the menu when pressed, so I'm assuming from that that it "should be" working.
There have been so many annoyances in this "upgrade," many of which work out when I have gotten used to the new way of doing things (it took me a while to get a sidebar to stick and work for me for example), and I trust that a very good program is coming but not yet. We're all beta testers, for a fee, I guess.

I'm reopening this discussion in hopes for some indication that the problem of non-functioning file compare is at least being worked on. Or, is there insufficient staff, or motivation, for cocoatech to address the loss of file compare? I wouldn't be that surprised as there are so many, many issues with the current version . . .

The non-performance of File Compare continues in PF 8.2. It has not been addressed. Will it ever be addressed, is the question.

I have the latest Path Finder 8.2 with 10.13.6 High Sierra. Configuring 'File Comparison' to use the 'Beyond Compare' file comparison tool works exactly as expected. Is this just an issue with using the opendiff tool then?

Thanks for an excellent tool in Path Finder, and keep up the good work!

Hey Bruiser . . . I just purchased Beyond Compare (after making sure it worked on my system) and I now have functionality for File Compare! Thanks for pointing this out to me, months ago! FW

Way back in July I reported that File Compare is non-functional. It still is. Is it being worked on? Is there any reason to have faith that it ever will be?

    Jordan,
Three key functions are still not working for me after upgrading to 8.5:
*** File Compare. I posted previously about this. In a dual window, both
text files selected, PF pointed to the opendiff location, neither F9 press
nor mouse to menu choosing has any visible affect, except when pressing F9
the menu choice blinks, as if it has in fact been accessed.
*** Terminal module. This has also been posted and discussed. Module drags
to the browser and opens a window but does not function. No connection is
    made to shell.
    *** No functional Find function.

    Hi Fred,

May I ask you to follow the instruction and check if the issue still persists:

    1. Delete Path Finder and its traces according to the article:
      http://support.cocoatech.com/kb/installation-and-compatibility/how-...
(The AppCleaner option is highly recommended)
    2. Download the latest version of the app from our site
    3. Launch Path Finder and move it to the Apps folder as the app suggests

Let me know how it goes.

I did this the last time. I'd do it again to follow your boilerplate
instructions just for the heck of it, but it turns out to be unnecessary,
as the new version came in and I installed that, which, I assume (maybe
incorrectly) stands in for what you're suggesting. Still, no change, no
Compare Files functionality with the new version. :-(

May I ask you to check if a new user profile (or a guest profile) experiences the same Terminal, File Compare, and Find window?

    Hi Fred,

You may create a new user profile in System Preferences -> Users & Groups by clicking "+" to add a new profile or "-" to delete the selected profile.

Could you please try creating a test user, and checking how Path Finder performs for that user? You may delete that user afterward.

Ah, yes, sorry for the mind-lapse. I knew about that. OK, I used the
"Guest" user to test PF and found, to my surprise, that the Terminal module
now worked, depositing me into a bash session at the "Guest" prompt.
Interesting, and hopefully you will be able to explain why it works in that
but not in my Home user. As for File Compare, still no joy. Just shows the
menu item lighting up (being employed) with no further action when F9 is
pressed, the same when clicked on in the menu itself. As for Find, I've
given up on it, especially since you all keep saying it's gonna be replaced
    anyhow. FW

    Hi Fred,

It looks like some preferences or defaults might be corrupted or otherwise set incorrectly on your main profile which prevents launching terminal from the Path Finder terminal module.

Regarding the File Compare, if you try any 3rd-party tool like Araxis Merge, Kaleidoscope, or the free DiffMerge does it still not work as expected?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Can you suggest what might be the culprit(s) here in terms of preferences
    or defaults?

I'll try that (if I can find them) and let you know.

    Hi,

I'm afraid I can't advise what part exactly may be to blame, but this suggests that a clean reinstall (e.g. with AppCleaner) might be helpful here.

This seems as if you're surrendering to the non-functionality of PF 8 for
file compare, by recommending other products. While I appreciate you trying
to help me get the functionality, it's a little dispiriting that you, as
    developer, are giving up.

    Hi Fred,

This is only for troubleshooting purposes, we are not giving up on this case. However, as we did not receive any similar reports and we weren't able to reproduce it, we have to check more and more potential failure points.

We are already using a built-in tool from macOS, the diff command-line tool provided by Apple and also used in macOS's FileMerge utility. By checking another utility, we can see if anything is wrong with this utility or during the hand-off process by Path Finder.

Please, also note that I am a support agent, not a developer.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks Mr Support Agent. I appreciate your response. I gave up on PF for
file comparison, just having purchased Beyond Compare and directing PF to
it's executable in Preferences. It works flawlessly. I'm out $30 but hey,
it's only money. How great it would have been had PF done this for me as
    is! Fred Weiner.

    Hi Fred,

    Thanks for checking this!

Since the issue does not persist with another diff tool selected, it is likely the issue with the built-in opendiff (File Merge) tool on your mac. We are investigating this further.

Please feel free to write us back and we will be happy to assist you.
