problems ejecting external drive

After viewing a video file on my external drive I can't eject the drive anymore.
I get an error alert which says Volume "..." could not be ejected, because "com.apple.qtkit" is still using it.
Even after I closed the tab which shows the files of the hd I have to wait several minutes 'til I can eject the drive.
Or I have to eject it to the finder.

Any suggestions?

Did you watch the video in QuickTime, Quick Look or in Path Finder's built-in Preview?

no, I watched it with VLC, but of course I have to select the file and before I click it, it shows up in the preview window

I suspected it was the Preview because of the com.apple.qtkit process and I found that, on occasion, it can lock files but I'm not able to reproduce it on a steady pattern. Next time it happens try to hide the Preview on the View menu and see if the behavior changes.

ok, I've tried. But hiding the preview didn't work, if I still have the video file selected. I had to close the tab and eject the drive again.

    browerman,

I don't know exactly what VLC does, but it certainly uses QTKit framework for its operations. Even though you apparently closed the file in VLC, it seems VLC didn't do all the clean-up properly and the file was still being used by the QuickTime framework. That's why you couldn't eject the volume and Path Finder has informed you exactly who was using the file.
