I tried to upgrade from PF7 to PF8 this morning, but PF 8 immediatly crashes after launch. Tried to download and a complete new install - including deleting preferences, and also restarted my machine, no luck. Sent a crash report from PF7, who picked up the crash.
Went back to PF7 now.

Same issues of crash at startup here, immediately after the nag screen closes.

    Downgraded.

PF 8 crashes way too often now, I have sent reports to apple and to developer
    Downgrading to PF7.
It especially crashes more often when there is no internet connection. It just hangs forever when displaying files, Providing system information.

On my machine PF8 is unusable, too: it doesn’t start at all. MBP 2012, OS 10.12.6, 8GB

Long time user, trial upgrade to 8 partly because 7.6.2 (1729) would crash 5-6x per day. I stopped sending reports.

PF8 will not open. Had to delete.

Despite PF7 crashing - still the best file manager out.

    Kind regards,

    Aron.

    Hi,

As mentioned above, please delete your preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.cocoatech.PathFinder.plist in case your PathFinder 8 crashes.

Regarding the empty purchase window, our developers reported that this issue has already been fixed, could you please confirm?

Sorry for the inconvenience with downgrading.

    Best Regards,
    Jordan

    @Path Finder Support Team -

Since multiple people are reporting other show stopping issues and at least one person is reporting that deleting preferences didn't fix the problem, I have a better idea. How about I not give you 20$ for the upgrade until you fix the program so that it works properly?

While monitoring the forums, I step back from upgrading and wait until PF8 is mature enough and has complete functionality. Asking for 20$ upgrade price to an existing application with even less functioniality then the older product has sound a bit strange to me.

Had the same issue with crashes after the nag screen. Deleted com.cocoatech.PathFinder.plist. That worked. But wait.... Closed the PathFinder window with red button (red/yellow/green in title bar). Tried to then re-launch PF8 from Dock. Now even bigger surprise...

Black Screen of Death on my Macbook Pro running macOS Sierra 10.12.6. The Panic Report is below for the record. Absolutely not ready... reverting back to PF7.

Same as the above, PF8 crashes, after nag screen.
Even after completely de-install of PF7 (clean my Mac)
Also after complete de-install of PF8 repeatedly.
Never had problems with PF7; switching back to PF7 or to Forklift wich also had a “dark mode”.

PathFinder 8 worked for me after deleting the preferences plist, but only until I tried to set PathFinder to be default browser; then it crashed.
    Bug is reproducible.
Puzzles me as to why something rather fundamental to the use of PathFinder wasn't spotted during testing?

    Hi,

Plese confirm, are you using Sierra?
May I ask you to follow the instruction and check if the issue still persists:

    1. Delete Path Finder and its traces according to the article:
      http://support.cocoatech.com/kb/installation-and-compatibility/how-...
    2. Download the latest version of the app from our site
    3. Copy zipped app to the Applications folder
    4. Unzip it into the Apps folder and launch

Let me know how it goes.

    Best Regards,

    Hey Jordan,

    I am using 10.12.6 Sierra.

I’ve tried the instructions below. Once the old P7 preference plist is deleted then P8 starts as expected, but with all of my preferences reset to their defaults, and all of my saved rename programs deleted.

After rebuilding all of my rename programs and sorting out most of my preferences, i then tried to switch on the option to have PathFinder be the default file browser this crashed PathFinder.

I was able to repeat this

A copy of the crash report associated with this issue is attached as a text file. (Please note that I think the crash report indicates 10.12.5 as OSX Version I’m using. However, About This Mac says it’s definitely 10.12.6)

Luckily I used AppDelete to remove PathFinder 7 and had AppDelete archive all of the PathFinder 7 files. I was then able to use this archive to reinstate PathFinder 7.

    Regards
    Mr James

    Jordan,

Based on the numero’s reactions regarding to PF8 I’ll wait untill new
    releases are distributed.
Sofar I am not convinced that your solution will solve the issues
    mentioned.

    Best regards,
    JJ

Please delete your preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.cocoatech.PathFinder.plist and check if the issue still persists.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Unfortunately this did not solve anything.
Uninstalled PF7 according to these instructions.
    http://support.cocoatech.com/kb/installation-and-compatibility/how-...

Same result, crash after nag screen.

    macOS High Sierra 10.13.4

    Installed PF7 again, runs flawless!

Stick to this version for the coming time until a stable version of PF8 appears.
    Keep me posted!

    Hey Ron,

I’ve tried deleting the preference plist. PF8 works after the P7 preferences file is deleted, but when I try to switch on the option to have PathFinder8 as the default file browser then PF8 crashes.

This bug is repeatable. Rather surprised this bug appeared as it’s rather fundamental to how PF is used?

    I’m now using PF7 again.

Attached is a text file with the crash log generated when I tried to set the default file browser option.

PS I would prefer not to have to delete my preferences file as I need to retain a whole host of rename programs. I think you should fix PF8 to work with the old plists; especially as you expect your users to pay for the upgrade.

    Regards
    Mr James

One simple trick worth trying, that never hurts, is to open your Disk Utility application and from its toolbar run First Aid. Should take about a minute, and sometimes works wonders.

    Hey Bjortvedt

I’ve already tried running Disk Utility and the First Aid option. I’ve also used disc maintenance scripts in Cocktail and CleanMyMac3.

None of these had any impact on the stability of PF8. PF8 is buggy.

    regards

Also worth trying, since Finder likes to bully Path Finder, is this tip from Cocoatech:

Please follow the instruction and check if the issue still persists:

    1. Open your terminal and paste the following command to check if Path Finder has been slapped with the quarantined extended attribute:
    xattr /Applications/"Path Finder.app"

    2. If you see com.apple.quarantine returned as output from that last command, then go ahead and run this next command:
    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/"Path Finder.app"

You won't get any feedback or output from that command, but that's okay because you can just run the first command again to see for yourself if the com.apple.quarantine attribute shows up again. It shouldn't, and now Path Finder is freed from Apple quarantine jail. Restart your PathFinder now.

Don't hesitate to contact us should any questions arise.

    Jordan

The quarantined extended attribute was not set for PathFinder 8.
